MICHIGAN

Hello all. Any Renaissance Unity people out there from the Marianne days? I was not able to attend the Sister Giant Conference live and meet you but viewed it all in real-time on LiveStream. I would like to connect with you whether you were there in person or on LiveStream. The one issue I have been getting involved in as of early last week is the Gerrymandering issue in Michigan… the redistricting in Michigan is so biased that the Republicans win was a surprise to just about everyone. I would like to hear about what you all are interested in taking on… let’s get together… do a meet-up?

Hi, Pat. I have also seen Marianne speak at RU. My husband and I attended the recent Sister Giant conference live in VA. We both signed up with a group working on this issue after the Women’s March in Lansing on Jan. 21; they were working toward a legislative amendment to coincide with the 2020 census. Now, I see a former Dem Chairman is planning to sue over this issue (see Freep article a few days ago). Would like to hear your thoughts on getting involved.

Hi, Kim. I saw the article in Sunday’s paper “Citizens can lead effort to do better: Michigan’s map of congressional districts”, but I haven’t had a chance to read the entire article. It looks like Stephen Henderson, the article’s author, was as the community meeting I attended last Wednesday evening – Kevin Krause, prof from Wayne State University specializing in Comparative Politics, gave a very good hour long presentation on Gerrymandering, and specifically in Michigan, and getting involved in this redistricting movement… I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dem Chairman is planning to sue over the issue since Krause said the way the redistricting was done by the Republicans in Michigan is unconstitutional… yes, he said they are working towards putting redistricting issue on the 2020 ballot to coincide with census. What group are you getting involved with? Would you like to talk over the phone or meet to talk further?

Thanks for the reply, Pat. It’s been a whirlwind few weeks and, at the moment, I cannot recall the name of the group at the state capitol, although I know most had been in jail and were also protesting the mandatory sentences for certain crimes. They are working toward the referendum that would be required to get an amendment in Michigan. I’m assuming since you’ve attended at Renaissance Unity that we are fairly close in proximity and would love to meet in person if possible (I spend hours on the phone for work already). Also, my husband is a life-long Michigan resident and very passionate about this issue so I think you two may have more perspective than I do, although I volunteer in Pontiac which is right next door to where we live in Lake Orion, so this is a very real issue for me, too. Where are you located? Hopefully, we can get some others involved as well!

So good to connect with someone about this!! I live in Troy, so we live fairly close to each other and I’m sure we can find some place half-way to meet. There seem to be a number of groups working on this issue… they all need to coordinate… that was one of the objectives of the community meeting I went to… to surface as many of these groups as possible so they could find a way to work together. A few of the groups are – Count My Vote, Common Cause, League of Woman Voters, Drive, Swing Left… I signed-in on a sheet that I think was from Count My Vote, but I’m not really familiar yet with any of them. There was a Representative from the State Legislature, but I need to find his name as he is supporting this effort. Can you think of a place where we could meet?… Would Downtown Rochester or there abouts be a good location?

I think this is brilliant… Robert Reich’s Resistance Report for January 8, 2017… “…The irony is we needed a Trump to get the Bernie Sanders Revolution…” Listen to the entire Report https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOW3V2TvsAA
