Zephyr is a national leader, speaking up against the corruption of our political system by special interests and big corporations. She is committed to fighting corruption, and has used every tool she has–writing, organizing, and politics–to fight for freedom from big corporations and big money corruption.
For her entire career Zephyr has been fighting for people who have been shut out– and gotten results. She was the first National Director of the Sunlight Foundation, a non-partisan organization that works to make Congress more open and transparent. After the crash of 2008, she helped start an organization to break up big banks who had become “too big to fail” and have damaged our small businesses. Her 2014 book, Corruption in America: From Benjamin Franklin’s Snuff Box to Citizens United, was published by Harvard University Press.
Zephyr is a reform-minded leader who has never been afraid of standing up to powerful special interests and the political establishment, even members of her own party. She was proud to stand side by side with New Yorkers in achieving one of the most historic environmental victories in the last several decades: the New York State wide fracking ban. She has been a strong voice for public education and stood with teachers and parents in the Anti-Common Core Opt Out Movement to roll back the worst effects of high-stakes testing.
Zephyr is passionate about local democracy, protecting our fragile water resources, great public education and a small business economy. She ran for Governor in 2014 and won a third of the vote against incumbent Andrew Cuomo in the primary, shocking political insiders. She also ran for Congress in the Hudson Valley 2016.
